West Midlands Regional Group
Our members come from across the West Midlands including Wolverhampton, and many parts of Birmingham – Kings Heath, Northfield, Handsworth and Sutton Coldfield, plus Coventry and Warwickshire.
We walk roughly once per month (Saturdays or Sundays) with the occasional evening walk in summer. On any given walk there can be 8–14 people. In the summer we travel further afield to find good walks in the Peak District, Welsh Borders, Shropshire Hills and The Cotswolds, whilst in winter we tend to stay closer to home.
Walks vary from 6–8 miles with gentle gradients to more challenging 10–14 miles with steep ascents and descents. Our publicity for each walk makes it clear how demanding the walk will be. Once a year we have a solstice walk culminating in a picnic while watching the sunset. We also have an annual full moon walk where we walk through the night and then celebrate the return of daylight with a pancake breakfast.
At least once a year the West Midlands group takes an active role in supporting access to the countryside. This usually takes the form of spending a day clearing footpaths or building stiles. For the last two years we have volunteered at the Lickey Hills Country Park.
We also organise at least one long weekend trip a year. Previous trips have been to Cornwall, Snowdonia, Exmoor and the Lake District.
